Certain people should avoid anabolic steroids entirely because the health risks greatly outweigh any potential benefits. Anyone with existing heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or a history of stroke is at higher risk of serious cardiovascular events when using steroids that raise blood pressure and unfavourable cholesterol ratios. Those with liver or kidney disease, including fatty liver or reduced kidney function, face added strain from oral compounds and highβdose injectables. People with hormoneβsensitive cancers such as prostate or some breast cancers must not use anabolic steroids, as androgens can exacerbate tumour growth. Adolescents whose bones are still developing, and those with a history of significant mental health problems or substance misuse, should also avoid steroids because of growth stunting and psychological destabilisation risks.
